Three weeks ago, Dovey J slipped to their first defeat of the campaign versus bogey-side, Whoever Athletic. The most Dovey J has ever taken from this encounter is a point.

Dovey K kicked off in a determined and confident fashion. Playing a slightly higher defensive-line than usual, they dominated early possession and swarmed all over a beleaguered and dis-jointed opposition. A neat through ball from Ian A allowed fellow-defender Chris C to lash home an opener from the left flank. Whoever Athletic resorted to defending in numbers; it was a classic example of desperate, damage-limitation. It was a mystery how they managed to make it to the break only trailing 3-1.

The second-half was a different affair. A rejuvenated opposition hussled and bussled from the outset, bringing out the nerves in the league leaders. Never a team to fare well under physical duress, Dovey J wobbled; at times it looked like an incredible upset could be on the cards. But it was not to be. For every goal Whoever A smashed home, Dovey J were able to hit on the break and deliver an instant riposte.

Full Time

Dovey Junction 8 v 5 Whoever Athletic

Nick J (4)

Andy B (2)

Rich H

Chris C

Alex A: The Dovey J No. 1 will be disappointed to have conceded five after last week's impressive clean sheet but could hardly be blamed for any of the goals. Most were driven from distance, at cannon-ball pace, through a crowd of players.

Ian A: Comfortable but never really got out of second gear. Created a couple of goals and made a series of important challenges.

Jamie A: Pre-match concerns about the absentee centre-half's fitness appeared unfounded. Strong and committed throughout. Rarely ventured beyond the half-way line but did what was asked of him. Excellent man-on-man job in the second period.

Chris C: Looks like becoming a regular feature in the starting line-up. Another reliable and consistent defence performance capped off with a rare yet well-taken first half goal.

Andy B: Arguably, one of his best performances this season. Displayed some wonderful first-touch football and looks like he is beginning to forge a dangerous partnership with Nick J. Two excellent goals which should boost his confidence no end.

Nick J: Terrific...again. Dominated the midfield and threatened every time he ventured forward. 8 goals in 2 game is league top-scorer territory.

Rich H: Unusually quiet return for the Dovey J No. 9. Nevertheless, he added a useful dimension to the squad and was at the heart of at least two of the goals.

Next week: KSC

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-10-08T19:13:45Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Spall

After easing past Maverick Mamuska last week, Dovey J head the premiership with 30 points from 11 games. Spall, sitting neatly in 4th spot posed a stiff challenge to a depleted DJ squad. With Jamie A, Ste S, Ste H and Rich H all sidelined, this was a potential banana-skin match for the league leaders.

Spall, renowned free-scorers, kicked off the most positive. Dovey J looked out of sorts in the opening minutes but soon got into their stride. In a tight first period, Dovey J sat deep, attacking quickly on the break; to devastating effect. A 2-0 half-time lead was well deserved.

It was more of the same in the second period. Dovey J soaked up the pressure from deep, frustrated their opponents, and hit on the break. Despite periods of pressure, the defence held tight and were rewarded with a first clean sheet of the season. And to cap off a fine display, a final attacking surge resulted in two well-worked late goals.

Final Score:

Dovey J 5 v 0 Spall

Nick J (4)

Ian A

Alex A: World class display. Inspired second-half performance; full credit for the clean sheet. Cemented his reputation as the league's best 'keeper.

Ian A: Majestic defensive display, capped off with a first-half screamer. On this performance, the chairman must not stall contract negotiations any longer. A 3-year deal will be worth every penny.

Chris C: Dovey J's 'lucky charm' delivered again. Accomplished performance. Positioning and discipline excellent, tackling immense. On the verge of a becoming a regular.

Jani: A promising performance from the youth team star. Looked neat on the ball and displayed flashes of real talent. Still lacks a physical presence but that will come with age.

Nick J: Former Wolves' star just keeps getting better. Midfield-dynamo turned goal-scoring hero. Strong, brave and lethal in front of goal. Vital to the title challenge.

Andy B: Tasked with a difficult job, the Dovey J No. 10 rose to the challenge. Defended robustly and forged an improved performance with Nick J when let loose upfront in the second period. Back on track.

Next week: Whoever Athletic

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-10-07T08:49:45Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Maverick Mamuska

After the disappointment of last week it was critical for Dovey J to return to winning ways against mid-table also-rans, Maverick Mamuska. Dovey have never lost to MM but encounters between the two are notoriously dull affairs.

With both Homfray brothers missing, Ste (fractured jaw), Rich (knee), Chris C was drafted back into the starting line-up.

Predictably, the game kicked off in dour fashion. Dovey J enjoyed most of the possession but failed to break down a rugged and determined MM defence. Nevertheless, their hard work was finally rewarded with two quick goals before the half-time break.

As MM tired, the second half opened up. Chances were created at both ends but it was Dovey J who took the initiative. At 4-0 a season's-first clean sheet looked on the cards. Alas, it was not to be. A neat one-two beat off the Angus brothers and gave MM a glimmer of hope. As MM pressed forward however, cracks appeared at the back which were ruthlessly exploited by Andy B and Nick J.

Final Score

Dovey Junction 6 v 1 Maverick Mamuska

Andy B (2)

Ian A

Nick J

Ste S

Chris C

Alex A: Thankfully, the Dovey J No.1 had shed his ghastly, lime green, eastern-european-esque goalkeeper jersey for tonight's match; and it seemed to transform his fortunes. After conceding four last week, he very nearly pulled of a deserved clean sheet. Immense from the outset. Pulled off a spectacular save in the second period, as the MM danger-man flashed in a long-range effort. The crowd could be heard to comment on the keeper's likeness to a leaping salmon in full flight.

Ian A: After a wobbly performance on Friday night, a solid performance was much-needed tonight. It was certainly delivered. Strong in the tackle and consistent in the pass and dangerous in front of goal. Should do his confidence the world of good.

Jamie A: Another faultless performance from the the younger Angus. Composed, disciplined and confident, he never looked threatened by the MM front-line.

Chris C: Drafted in at the last minute but didn't disappoint. In fact, this was arguably his best performance in orange and white. Rock solid in the tackle and even weighed in with a well-taken first half goal.

Nick J: Oozes quality. Bossed the midfield and created a raft of chances in front of goal. Suffed an injury scare in the first half but thankfully it was nothing too serious.

Andy B: Tireless performance topped off with two well-deserved second half goals. A newfound confidence could see the No.9 smash home a stack of goals in the coming matches.

Ste S: An uncharacteristically poor performance last week has been consigned to to newspaper print. Back to form, the midfield maestro was at the heart of tonight's all-round positive team display. Didn't stop running, found space and created a plethora of chances for others. Excellent match.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-09-23T21:23:10Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Whoever Athletic

16/09/07

Dovey Junction have opened the campaign with a record haul of points. A win tonight versus third spot, Rodney's Pilchards would see them harness a full 27 points from 9 games.

A near full-strength squad kicked off in a confident fashion but found themselves frustrated by an exceptional first half-performance from the opposition's rather rotund, yet deceptively agile goalkeeper. After a period of attrition, the deadlock was finally broken by a clinical finish from midfield dynamo, Ste S. Almost immediately, the opposition responded, taking advantage of a lapse in concentration at the heart of the Dovey J defence to drill home an equaliser. A disciplined first-half performance paid dividends however, as the league's only unbeaten club, extended their half-time lead to 3-1.

A lacksidasical second half-performance threatened that seemongly comfortable lead. A resurgent opposition played the counter-attack system to perfection and within only five minutes of the final whistle had levelled the match at 4-4. However, in displaying the kind of steel so desperately lacking from the squad at times last season, Ste S rallied the troops and smashed home two late goals to ensure the full three points and an extended unbeaten run.

Final Score:

Dovey Junction 7 v 4 Rodney's Pilchards

Ste S (4)

Rich H (2)

Jamie A

Alex A: Pulled off two world class first-half saves. Had no chance with two of the RP goals but on another day may have kept out the other two - one through the legs and one high and central. The 4am chicken bhuna could be to blame for delayed reactions.

Ian A: Steady but unspectacular. Struggled to stamp any real authority on proceedings. Had few chances to bomb forward; the efforts he did have were sliced wide or expertly blocked. At fault for the oppositions' equaliser.

Jamie A: Assured and confident performance, especially in the first period - won literally every challenge and distribution was near faultless. Guilty of two ropey second-half back-passes but they shouldn't detract from an excellent outing.

Ste H: Another solid performance from the Dovey J centre-half. At fault for the opposition's opener but played a blinder thereafter.

Ste S: Monumental in midfield. Never stopped running and acted as the perfect creative antidote to a sterile team performance in the second period. It is no coincidence that the signing of the former Mean Machine star over the summer has coincided with Dovey J's surge to to the top of the league. Weighed in with four quality goals.

Andy B: Industrious performance. Worked exceptionally hard. Still struggling to find his shooting boots though; needs to start weighing in with more goals.

Rich H: Stoned. Ineffective for large swathes of the match, but devastating in front of goal. The new Freddie Eastwood.

Next week: Whoever Athletic.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-09-10T08:56:55Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Wombourne Heat

Dovey J kicked off this evening's match in 2nd spot after a blistering start to the season propelled Boca Seniors to the top of the table. Still, Dovey J had played 5, won 5 and were brimming with confidence. With a full squad at their disposal, they clearly fancied their chances versus local rivals Wombourne Heat.

The match kicked off cautiously. Dovey J dominated possession but struggled to carve a way through a rugged and determined WH back line. It took a full 5-6 minutes before the deadlock was broken. Dodging a flurry of outrageous challenges Dovey J continued to press forward and were rewarded with a further two goals before the half-time break.

The second half was less about football and more about violence. WH kicked off determined to intimidate and nothing more. It was brutal. Dovey J players were chopped, slide-tackled and smashed into the walls. The ref lost control and was himself subject to disgraceful racist abuse. If I owned that place, WH would be banned for life. Instead, they don't even get cautioned and will line-up again as a top four club next week. Dovey J plugged away, refused to rise to the bait and slammed another three goals down their throat. Professional performance and well-deserved sixth win on the bounce.

Final Score

Dovey Junction 6 v 1 Wombourne Heat

Nick J (4)

Andy B

Ste H

Alex A: A remarkably quiet game for the Dovey J No.1. Kept out a series of efforts during a wobbly phase during the second half but compared to the average game, had very little to do.

Ian A: Carrying an injury from his afternoon match, the Dovey J veteran settled for a token run-out in the second period. Solid. Not a foot wrong.

Jamie A: Barnstorming performance. Snuffed out the WH danger man from the outset. First to every ball, strong in the tackle and intelligent in distribution. 10/10.

Ste H: Excellent, disciplined performance from the older Homfray. Bagged Dovey's sixth and final goal despite being kicked and fouled in the process; testament to his commitment and passion.

Nick J: Arguably his most impressive and lively performance to-date. Brimming with confidence the teenage sensation drilled wide a series of early warning shots before bagging an impressive four goals. Just quality.

Ste S: Continues to play the free role with outstanding skill and guile. Adds a totally different dimension to Dovey J's play. Defends, creates, scores. Signing of the season.

Andy B: Another excellent performance from Andy B. Neat, simple football. Lashed a series of ferocious efforts just wide; was unlucky not to hit more goals. Is nearing a return to top form.

Rich H: Remarkably, left the field of play without a goal to his name. Still, it was a commendable performance. Displays a newfound commitment to the cause.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-08-14T07:10:38Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Wombourne Heat

On the back of four straight premiership wins, a near full strength Dovey Junction lined up versus old rivals, Wombourne Heat. A perennial top four side, Wombourne Heat would prove the test of mettle so far lacking in Dovey's opening fixtures.

Wombourne Heat kicked off looking the more composed outfit. In the opening two or three minutes Dovey J looked out of sorts and rarely saw possession. Then, in classic Dovey J style, Ian A broke from the back and in the space of 90 seconds had set-up the opening two goals; quality finishes from Rich H and Andy B. Dovey J became more assertive as the half played out and a possible rout looked on the cards. Half time: 4-0.

Despite the odd flurry of 'total football', it was a less impressive second period for the lads in orange and white. Rather than settling for a season's first clean-sheet, Dovey J pressed forward, almost recklessly, in search of more goals. Although it reaped dividends early on as Dovey J surged to a 6-0 lead, the shape had been lost and the defence looked ragged. The final few minutes were disappointing although not entirely unexpected. Wombourne Heat took advantage of Dovey's aggressive counter attacking and exposed gaping holes at the back. Three late goals salvaged some respect for the away team and was a clear warning shot across the bows of an overly-confident Dovey J squad. Nonetheless, 5 wins from 5 sees Dovey J pulling away at the top of the premiership.

Final Score:

Dovey Junction 6 v 3 Wombourne Heat

Rich H (4)

Ste H

Andy B

Alex A: World class performance from the Dovey J No. 1. A series of top-notch saves drove the WH No.9 to near fanatical frustration. Let down by his defence in the second period. He should have walked away with a deserved clean sheet.

Ian A: Exceptional first half performance. Won every tackle, delivered a series of defence-splitting balls and set-up the opening two goals. Looked a little ragged in the second period as he struggled to keep together the defensive back line.

Jamie A: Rock solid throughout; not a foot wrong. Linked up well with Ste S and in one of the highlights of the first period, received a one-two back from Ian A, surged the length of the field and clipped the ball home; only to be denied by a controversial 'in the box' call by the referee.

Ste H: Looked a little out of sorts and was clearly struggling with fitness. Nevertheless, he defended excellently and weighed in with another noteworthy goal.

Ste S: Another faultless performance from the summer signing. Arguably one of the most talented players in the league, Ste S was at the heart of creative play. His cushioned first half header, slammed home by Rich H was pure brilliance.

Andy B: On the back of an explosive performance on Friday night, the Dovey J striker is nearing a return to top form. An excellent first half performance was rounded off by a well finished goal. Linked up particularly well with Ste S.

Rich H: Awesome. Wreaked havoc in front of goal. On this form, quite probably the most lethal No.9 in the top flight.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-07-31T09:47:44Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Spall

It had been three seasons since these two teams last met; Dovey J pipped Spall to automatic promotion in the last few weeks of the Division 1 season. After a successful season just gone, Spall have finally made it into the top flight. Prior to kick off, Dovey J sat top of the league, Spall in the third spot.

Without Jamie A and Nick J, it promised to be a closely fought encounter. Spall kicked off the most lively side, and dominated the opening minutes of play. Dovey J struggled to string any meaningful passes together and looked decidedly nervous and rocky when in possession. Dovey J continued to soak up the pressure before counter-attacking and against the run of play, snatching a 1-0 lead. Three further goals followed in quick succession. Remarkably, Dovey J entered the break 4-0 up.

Much of the same followed in the second period. Spall registered most of the possession but systematically failed to breakdown a rigid Dovey J defence. Dovey J continued to hit on the break, with devastating results. At 5-0 Dovey J looked like notching up their first clean sheet of the season. However, an uncharacteristic howler from the Dovey J No. 1 put pay to that. Nevertheless, the league leaders hit back in the dying minutes with two further goals including a cheeky effort from No. 9, Rich H. Spall took one hell of a beating.

Final Score:

Dovey J 7 v 1 Spall

Rich H (3)

Ste S (2)

Andy B

Ste H

Alex A: One second half error shouldn't take the shine off an otherwise world class performance. Took a severe winding in the first half after taking a cannonball-like effort into his stomach but battled on to carry off a string on critical saves.

Ian A: The veteran's good form continues. Rarely looked tested and marshalled the defence from start to finish. Developing a trusted, solid relationship with stand-in centre half, Chris C.

Chris C: Another faultless, no-nonsense performance from the reserve team centre-half. Excellent positioning sense and strong and reliable in the tackle.

Ste H: Was allowed a slightly more free role than usual allowing him to boss the middle of the park and burst forward on the counter-attack. Continues to make crucial challenges.

Ste S: Another excellent all-round performance topped off with a brace. Bargain buy of the summer transfer market who has turned Dovey J from a UEFA into a Champions League quality outfit.

Andy B: Absolutely tireless performance again. Linked in well with Ste S and Rich H and is back en-route to top form. Added another well taken goal to his season's tally.

Rich H: Breathtaking. It isn't a coincidence that Dovey's impressive run of results has coincided with the No. 9's return to top form. Ghosted past Spall's back two and was rewarded with another two excellent goals.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-07-16T16:31:14Z</dcterms:modified>

Ralgex v Dovey Junction

A repeat of the previous week's fixture pitted top versus bottom of the Premiership.

Despite missing the Homfray brothers, Dovey J kicked off the early evening encounter brimming with confidence.

Dovey dominated the early minutes with neat, high-tempo possession-football. Ralgex struggled to break out of their half and created few meaningful chances in front of goal. The Dovey opener came within five minutes. Jamie A surged forward before dragging the ball back to Ian A who rifled in a low effort from distance. 1-0. Some nervy defending temporarily allowed Ralgex back into the game; but not for long. A second Dovey goal followed by a left-foot volley from Ian A wrapped up an impressive first half performance. Half time: 3-0.

Ralgex opened the second half without substitutes; for the second week running, their young winger had been nobbled by the veteran Dovey centre-half. It should have been a rollover; it wasn't. A serious of defensive mix-ups allowed Ralgex to snatch a goal and pile forward in search of a second. For a short spell it seemed like a mammoth comeback was on the cards. After a substiute re-shuffle Dovey regained their shape and settled the match. Goals from Ste S, Sean W and a hat-trick from Ian A sealed a third straight win in the new season.

Final Score:

Ralgex 2 v 6 Dovey Junction

Ian A (3)

Ste S

Nick J

Sean W

Alex A: Recovered from a bad winding in the first half to keep out a series of speculative second half efforts. Excellent performance.

Jamie A: Solid game but looked a little off the pace; must have been dreaming of sunnier climates. Needs to ensure that he limits his kebab and lager intake on holiday.

Ian A: Proving his critics wrong with another quality, no-nonsence outing - despite his age, could be offered another long-term contract on the back of this performance. Weighed in with an impressive hat-trick.

Nick J: Developing a solid rapport with Ste S, Nick continues to act as the midfield dynamo. Chipped a tooth in the first period, but bounced back as a calming second half influence.

Ste S: Continues to add that touch of quality to the side. Worked hard linking the defence to the front two. Steal of the transfer market.

Andy B: Worked tirelessly but struggled to find that elusive goal. Still a little low on confidence, but emerging out of a mixed spell of form. At some point in the coming weeks the opposition will find themselves on the back of a Brittle goal-flood.

Sean W: A late loan agreement with fellow title contenders, Santiago, allowed the striker to feature v Ralgex. Struggled slightly to adapt to the Dovey J style of play but ran his heart out and fired home a well-deserved goal.

Three impressive wins from three. Dovey J head the Premiership.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-07-11T14:18:00Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Ralgex

For the first time in months Dovey J was able kick off a Premiership fixture with a full-strength squad.

Dovey kicked off with intent. Ralgex, under the cosh, decided to play a cautious game and made a good effort of soaking up the relentless pressure and then attempting to hit on the break. It very nearly worked. Dovey recorded 80% of the first half possession but struggled to beat an inspired Ralgex goalkeeper. After finally breaking the deadlock, a midfield error allowed Ralgex to sneak one back before the break. In a frustrating first period, the only real excitement came as the veteran Dovey centre-half, Ian A, clattered into Ralgex's tricky winger; a challenge which finished off the young lad's evening. Half time: 1-1.

Dovey J are rapidly becoming the masters of the second half. A tiring Ralgex outfit struggled to contain a powerful Dovey side brimming with energy and enthusiasm. Overwhelmed, the goals soon began to flow. Ralgex barely registered an effort in a second period, in which Dovey slammed home six.

Final Score:

Dovey J 7 v 1 Ralgex

Alex A: Plenty of possession yet tested very rarely. Made a couple of good parries from long-distance efforts but enjoyed a relatively quiet match.

Ian A: Enjoying a confidence-surge. Masterful in the tackle and dangerous going forward. Clipped home a trademark goal in the second half. Never looked troubled.

Jamie A: Calm as they come. Solid in the challenge and ever-reliable in the pass. Never looked like he might be beaten.

Ste H: Another lively performance from the elder Homfray. Enjoyed the freedom in the middle of the park and made a series of unaccustomed forward runs. Rewarded with a good goal.

Ste S: Such a talent. Has added a new and creative dimension to Dovey's play. Steal of the Spring transfer market.

Nick J: Keeps on getting better. Bossed the play in midfield yet took up the mantle in defence and up-front when required; a fully versatile performance. Critical to the team. Weighed in with another two quality goals.

Andy B: Best and most confident performance in months. Skilful in possession and much improved in delivery. Fully deserved his goal; more are on the way.

Rich H: Revelling alongside Nick J and Ste S, the teenage No. 9 threatened havoc throughout the match. Only netted once, but was at the heart of much of the attacking play.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-07-02T18:08:35Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Bin Laden's Barmy Army

Not quite sure of the appropriateness of the Premiership newcomers' name but anyway...

After narrowly missing out on a UEFA cup spot, Dovey J kicked off the new Premiership season v promoted Champions, BLBA. BLBA stormed the Championship last season, winning a record 28 of 30 matches. With Dovey J missing Jamie A and Ste S, it looked like a potential banana skin of an opener.

The first half was uninspiring. Neither side was willing to take any risks, hence a fairly dour affair. The key difference between the two sides being the superior pace and ability to finish of the visitors. Dovey J looked disjointed and once again, desperately blunt in front of goal. Despite a decent proportion of the possession a weary Dovey J entered the half-time break 3-0 down.

The second half was an entirely different affair. Spurred on by an early goal by Nick J, Dovey J rallied to the cause and displayed a new-found steel, grit and passion. Upping the ante, Dovey J chased every ball, lunged in for every available tackle and began to visibly unsettle the new boys. A flurry of goals in quick succession from the Homfray brothers put Dovey J back on a level footing; a dramatic comeback was suddenly on the cards. 4-4.

After a neat ball layed from the back, Ian A darted the length of the pitch, seized the return ball across goal and clipped home a left-footed effort beyind the BLBA goalkeeper. The subs bench erupted. 5-4. One final goal in the dying seconds secured an heroic second half performance and a mightily well-deserved 6-4 victory. Dovey J so often flatter to deceive. Could this finally be their season?

Final Score:

Dovey Junction 6 v 4 Bin Laden's Barmy Army

Ste H (2)

Ian A

Nick J

Andy B

Rich H

Alex A: Immense performance between the sticks and a critical motivator in the second half. Must be hoping for a full international call-up in the coming months.

Ian A: After a lacklustre training performance on Friday evening, the veteran centre-half returned to top form. Snuffed out the BLBA attacking threat in the second period and rarely looked troubled. Ended a dry spell in front of goal with a well executed left-footed finish. Still lacking in fitness and sharpness but more than made up for it with his reading of the game.

Chris C: Admirable performance from the loan signing centre half who has developed a solid partnership with the eldest Angus brother. Calm and disciplined; a faultless and determined performance.

Ste H: A return to top form after a confidence-wobble over recent weeks. Strong in the tackle and dangerous when surging forward. A deserved two-goal return for his efforts.

Nick J: Currently on a 7-mile-a-day training programme the teenage midfield sensation formed the bedrock of the second half comeback. Combative, strong and intelligent in his delivery; a formidable performance.

Andy B: Cut a lonely figure up-front in the first period; let down by a lack of movement from his own players and a tendency to hold on to the ball for a second too-long. A vastly improved second half period saw him at the heart of a good proportion of the Dovey J goals.

Rich H: Remarkably, trotted on to the pitch without being under the influence of drink or drugs. Endured a fairly quiet first half before tearing apart the BLBA defence in the second. Smashed home an absolute screamer to level the game at 4-4; already, a serious contender for goal of the season.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-06-26T13:35:53Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v All White

Propelled back into a UEFA cup spot by a series of outstanding owed-points, Dovey J lined up in the searing Wall Heath heat to face 2nd placed All White. Fielding their strongest team of the season the lads were hopeful of an upset.

The match kicked off cautiously; neither side willing to take any risks. Dovey J looked fairly comfortable in possession but struggled to break down a rugged and well organised All White defence. After conceding a goal mid-way through the half, Dovey J replied instantly with a belter from centre-half, Ian A. Defensive lapses allowed the nippy opposition strikers in on goal again however; the lads entered the break 3-1 down.

Dovey J kicked off the second period in style. Two early goals levelled the match up and offered the real prospect of a shock victory. It wasn't to be. Tired legs and a lack of sharpness put pay to that. As with last week, the opposition took advantage of Dovey's roaming defence and hit hard and quickly on the break.

A heartening and much improved performance against arguably, the best and quickest side in the league. If Dovey J can just keep this squad together they can be hopeful of at least a top six finish.

Final Score

Dovey J 5 v 7 All White

Ste S (2)

Ian A

Andy B

Ste H

Alex A: Fell victim to a couple of freak goals, of which he could do nothing to prevent. Played to his usual high standard and kept out a host of short and long range efforts.

Ian A: Excellent first half, strong in the tackle and capped off with a stinging right-footed goal from distance. Flagged a litttle in the second; struggled to cope with the pace of All White's teenage winger.

Jamie A: Another solid game. Unable to break forward as much of late but marshalled the defence well and Dovey J rarely conceded when he was on the field of play.

Ste H: Improved performance this week. Did an excellent man-marking job at the back and broke forward in the second period to deliver an unstoppable effort into the top right hand corner of the net.

Ste S: Full of energy and creativity and smacked home two well-taken goals. Took a knock on the knee early in the first period and spent a prolonged period of time on the bench.

Nick J: Quiet-ish return for the teenage dynamo after a 3-month injury lay-off. Added some extra bite and shape to the midfield but lacking slightly in sharpness and stamina. Will need a handful of games to reach top form again.

Andy B: Still not 100% but making good progress. Scored one good goal and nearly wriggled his way through for more. Confidence is gradually returning.

Rich H: Unusually quiet game for the Dovey J no. 9 and he failed to find the net. Looked dangerous in parts during the first half; largely ineffective in the second. Still, the team does struggle for shape when he is off the pitch.

Next week: TBC

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-06-10T19:27:53Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Rodney's Pilchards

Despite their No.9 going AWOL only two hours before kick-off, Dovey J kicked off v mid-table outfit, Rodney's Pilchards, in a confident mood. The early signs looked positive. Dovey J dominated the opening play through creative playmaker Ste S and within five minutes found themselves defending a 2-0 lead. Alas, the loss of Jamie A from the defence in a mid-half substitution, caused problems at the back and led to the lads in orange and black conceding two goals in quick succession. 2-2 at half-time flattered the visitors. Again, Dovey J wasted too many efforts on goal.

Rodney's Pilchards, boosted by the half-time acquisition of a Brad Friedel look-a-like in-between the posts, began to counter-attack in the second period and took advantage of a Dovey J back-two determined to push forward in search of goals. Dovey J played a positive attacking game, but were lacklustre in front of goal. Effort after effort was blocked, saved or drilled wide; an unforgiveable amount of wasted chances. The outcome was all too predictable. Dovey J were punished for their inability to finish. A late goal killed off a match which should not have been lost.

Final Score:

Dovey J 4 v 5 Rodney's Pilchards

Alex A: Excellent performance. Had relatively few close-range efforts to contend with but dealt with a flurry of second-half long-range shots. Deeply unlucky with two of the goals.

Jamie A: A solid and determined performance from the Dovey J centre-half. Rarely put a foot wrong and delivered another superb goal.

Ian A: Much improved outing for the veteran defender. Rock solid at the back and back to his best surging forward. Rarely looked troubled in possession or in the tackle.

Chris C: Recalled at the last minute for only his third outing in the orange and black shirt. At slight fault for the opening two goals but soon adapted to the pace of play and delivered a very good second half performance.

Ste H: An unusually quiet game from the defender/midfield dynamo. Looked disinterested in parts and stuggled to get to game with flow of the game.

Ste S: His tireless effort and graft should have been rewarded with a goal. Played box-to-box and didn't stop running. Often at the heart of creative play, he was frustrated time and again in front of goal. Quality addition to the squad.

Andy B: Still appears to be struggling slightly with fitness and confidence but this was a big-step towards a return to top-form. Drilled home two well taken goals and made good movement. Needs to release the ball earlier on occasion.

Next week: All White

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-06-07T17:14:29Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Ralgex

After a fixture-lag and a disappointing string of results, early season championship contenders, Dovey Junction, lined up v Ralgex, hovering dangerously above the Premiership drop zone; their lowest league placing in two seasons.

A cash injection by the board allowed for a late season spending spree, seeing Ste Showell join the fold from Division 1 arch-rivals, Mean Machine. Could it be enough to save Dovey J from relegation?

Fielding a full side for the first time in months, Dovey J kicked off in blistering fashion with the debutant rifling in an effort after two minutes. After a well-taken second from J, Dovey were put on the backfoot for the rest of the half and were probably fortunate to enter the break level at 2-2.

Ralgex are a physical and disciplined side and began to flex their strength and experience in the second period. However, the Dovey J defence held strong and repelled attack after attack. A brilliant effort by Andy Brittle settled the nerves and within a space of minutes Rich H has skipped past two defenders and nutmegged the opposition goalkeeper. Ralgex heads dropped and seconds before the final whistle Rich H drilled home a well deserved fifth goal for the boys in orange and white.

Full-Time

Dovey J 5 v 2 Ralgex

Rich H (2)

Andy B

Jamie A

Ste S

Alex A: Back to top form. Parried a series of powerful long-range efforts and looked confident in delivery.

Ian A: Average performance; struggling to re-create his friday night form. Nothing spectacular but no errors either. Risked a serious head injury in a second half challenge - dedication to the cause obviously.

Ste H: Desperately hungover but played well. Looked solid alongside J.

Jamie A: Solid and dependable at the back; the spine of a second half clean sheet performance from the defence. Curled home a delightful effort in the first half.

Ste S: A rousing full-time debut from the former Mean Machine playmaker. Adds bite and creativity to a Dovey J side lacking in confidence and still rocking from the long-term njury to midfield dynamo Nick J. A quality addition to the side.

Andy B: Still struggling to overcome a slight dip in form and confidence. Looked tired in the second period but held the ball up well and drilled home a deserved second half goal. The arrival of Ste Showell should complement Andy B's game.

Rich H: Stoned, but devastatingly effective in front of goal. Battled hard and tormented the Ralgex defence throughout. Notched up another brace to his season's tally.

Next week: TBC.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-05-28T10:49:48Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Ralgex

After another extended break Dovey J returned to action this evening, expecting two matches v Special Brew and Ralgex. Special Brew cancelled so instead 'the management' conjured up a cup match v lower league opposition. Now, Dovey J have a 100% record in the so called 'cup competition'. Played 4, won 4; yet they have never progressed beyond round 2. Management takes the piss. Whenever a team cancels they create a fantasy cup (which never materialises) just so they can claim another £52 off the two teams. Disgraceful. The skipper put his foot down and refused to play.

So, an hour later, Dovey J kicked off against mid-table rivals, Ralgex. Forced to line-up with another makeshift outfit it was always going to be a tough game. It kicked off calamitously. Two stupid defensive errors within the opening minutes saw Dovey J concede two goals in quick succession. Nervy and lacking discipline, a rout looked on the cards.

A marginally improved performance in the latter stages of the half ensured Dovey J entered the break all-level. The second half kicked off positively; within five minutes Dovey J had taken the lead and looked fairly comfortable. A quick succession of substitutions soon put pay to that, and by the end Dovey J looked ragged and shot of confidence. A flurry of late goals killed off the game and extends Dovey J's sequence of results without a win. Confidence is low and with a dangerously depleted squad, this could be Dovey J's final season.

Final Score: Dovey J 7 v 9 Ralgex

Alex A: Blocked a succession of good long-range efforts, but this probably wasn't his finest half hour. Guilty of one or two suicide deliveries.

Ian A: Awful. Should retire.

Jamie A: Not his usual confident-self. Looked edgy and distribution was suspect at times. Still, he was probably Dovey J's best player on the night. Scored a screamer in the first half.

Greg J: Flashes of class but struggled to re-adapt to the 5-a-side game. Not lacking in effort but fitness was suspect. Looked dangerous going forward but guilty of silly mistakes at the back.

Sean W: Ineffective. Fails to produce his best in an orange and black shirt.

Andy B: Industrious and committed. Ran tirelessly and scored a couple of excellent goals. Sometimes needs to look for the early, simple lay-off.

Rich H: Well, for someone who had knocked back 7 pints of Stella during the course of the day he did remarkably well. Made a real impact in the first period especially and weighed in with a good hat-trick of goals.

Next week: Opponents TBC. A victory is desperately needed to restore confidence and to prevent a slide into oblivion.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-04-22T19:52:05Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Boca Seniors/Manbreast United

After an extended break, Dovey J returned to Sunday league action last night. Sitting relatively comfortably in mid-table, but with 5-6 games in hand over their nearest competitors, Dovey J faced a double fixture whammy - Boca Seniors and Manbreast United.

The 5pm kick off versus Boca Seniors was never going to be an easy ride. In their promotion season of 2005, Dovey J escaped a team who had been a continual thorn in their side. An ill-disciplined but physical and dangerous outfit, Boca Seniors frequently managed to intimidate their middle-class opponents into defeat. This was the first top-flight meeting of the two old enemies.

After a blistering start to the season Dovey J have been rocked by a series of injuries, most notably to link man, Nick Jones, and an occasional lack of commitment from others. The result has been a mid-season wobble and a week-on-week fielding of inexperienced players: the effect has been a noticeable collapse in morale.

Boca Seniors' No. 9 is arguably one of the trickiest players in the league. He is short, fat and has the biggest 'bootie' I have ever seen. But he is a strong as an ox, has a delightful touch and a rocket-shot to match. Match after match, Dovey J have struggled to contain him.

Last night was no different. Straight from kick off he cracked a blistering effort towards goal. A reflex save from Al prevented a 3 second goal but very nearly broke his foot.

Boca Seniors hammered the Dovey J goal in the opening minutes as the back two struggled to contain the threat. However, the Dovey J front two were able to take advantage of lapses in discipline and threatened the opposition's goal with some frequency.

It wasn't long however, before the deadlock was broken. Clever link-up play between the Boca Seniors' front men, carved open the Dovey J defence before an unstoppable effort was rattled past Alex A. Dovey J responded with a quick equaliser but were set-back again shortly before half-time.

Dovey J entered the break 2-1 down and with morale sinking even further.

A new look defence at the beginning of the second period seemed to generate a newfound confidence in the Dovey J side. As J and Ste contained the attacking threat, Rich and Sean began to wreak havoc in front of goal. Within minutes, Dovey J suddenly found themselves 3-2 to the good and in control. Alas, it wasn't to last. Subsitutions upset the balance of the side and by the final whistle Dovey J had slid to a disappointing 7-4 defeat.

Final Score: Dovey J 4 v 7 Boca Seniors

Sean W (2)

Rich H

Jamie A

Alex A - Superb. Parried effort-after-effort, frustrating the opposition's No. 9: the difference between a disappointing 3-goal defeat and a humiliating thrashing.

Ian A - Desperately out of form and suffering from a chronic loss of confidence. Struggling to shake off injury and illness, the veteran looked slow off the mark and ineffective in the tackle. Looked dangerous breaking forward but was a liability at the back. The squad looked stronger with him on the bench.

Jamie A - Lashed home a wonderful bending effort, which seemed to generate a new confidence in the Dovey J centre-half. Didn't put a foot wrong and did a top-rate job on the opposition's No. 9 in the second half. Forming a solid and complementary partnership with Ste H.

Ste H - Excellent performance, full of grit and determination. Snuffed out the Boca Senior's danger man for most of the match. Rapidly establishing himself as one of the best man-markers in the league.

Andy B - Another frustrating outing for the Dovey J forward; his dry-spell seemingly compounded by the endless changes to the team line-up and formation. Struggling to form a meaningful relationship with Sean and Rich and often forced into a less-accustomed midfield role. Continues to offer 100%.

Rich H - Flitted in and out of the game. A relatively quiet first half was bettered by a lethal opening to the second period. Combined well with Sean but struggled to break down a rugged Boca Senior's back two.

Sean W - Another livewire performance from the stand-in No. 9. Was at the heart of the majority of Dovey J's efforts on goal although guilty of drilling most of them high above the crossbar. Couldn't be faulted for effort and commitment.

Dovey J 5 v 0 Manbreast Utd

A surprise no-show from Manbreast United afforded Dovey J a much-needed automatic 5-0 victory and three points.

Next week: Another two matches: Rodney's Pilchards and The Badgers

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-04-03T08:28:57Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Ralgex

With a fixture backlog, this is the time of the season when fitness and availability is critical to any team hopeful of league glory. In 5th position but with 3 games in hand over most of the clubs above them, Dovey J, ahead of tonight's match v third bottom, Ralgex, looked a firm bet for a top three spot. However, injuries and poor discipline are beginning to dent the club's chances of success. Nick J missed a third consecutive game through injury, Ste H aggravated an old knock earlier in the day, Morg was unavailable and Rich...well, Rich was stoned. Apparently by mid-afternoon he couldn't stand or see straight, let alone kick a football. It was a credit to the manager that Dovey J managed to field a side at all. A team full of ringers was always going to find the going tough; stability is the cornerstone of Dovey's game.

In line with expectations, Dovey J kicked off in unconvincing style. An early error, followed quickly by poor tracking, saw Dovey J 2-0 down within 5 minutes. The omens did not look good. However, after a period of calm, Ian A made a trademark burst down the right wing and crashed home a response. A couple of inspired substitutions and the game began to turn. Two wonder goals followed from Neil A, before Sean slotted home before the whistle. The boys in orange and black entered the break 4-3 to the good and in full control.

An early second half goal, looked to have settled the match at 5-3. However, a mid-half capitulation followed. Discipline collapsed, organisation crumbled and morale drained away. At 5-4, the ref's stop clock was heard but despite protestations play continued...and continued...and continued. A long range effort followed by a cruel deflection in the dying seconds sent Dovey J home with nothing. A team who only four weeks ago were genuine title contenders have suddenly become an average middle-of-the-pack outfit and the fans are getting restless.

Final Score:

Dovey J 5 v 6 Ralgex

Neil A (2)

Ian A

Rob B

Sean W

Alex A: Kept out a series of fierce efforts but struggling to reach the heights of his early-season form. Is the Dovey J No.1 losing faith in his back two?

Ian A: Still struggling with fitness but a much improved performance on last week. Defended steadily and looked dangerous going forward. Cracked home a great first half goal but was at slight fault for the penultimate goal. It is a worry that a veteran centre half with only two 11-a-side goals in 15 years looks more lethal in front of goal than his own strikers.

Jamie A: At clear fault for the opening goal but defended solidly thereafter. It was difficult to blame the defence tonight; they were frequently over-run due to a weak midfield. Overall, a decent performance. Perhaps needs a confidence-jab to get back to his best.

Rob B: A solid performance from the Santiago star. Defended well and battlded hard in midfield when called upon to do so. Weighed in with an important goal. Difficult to fault.

Andy B: Still not firing on all cylinders. One should not underestimate the No. 9's work-rate; he adds a critical dimension to an otherwise static Dovey J outfit. However, his performances in front of goal are beginning to raise questions about his goalscoring credentials. In desperate need of a confidence boost.

Sean W: Occasionally guilty of not tracking back but difficult to fault. Quick-footed, pacy and skilful, Sean was the only frequent threat to the Ralgex goal. Rumours of a permanent move continue to sweep the terraces. Man of the Match for the second consecutive game.

Neil A: Masterful yet at the same time, utterly frustrating. Turned the first half within seconds of making his substitute appearance. Notched two quality goals but frequently played the defence into trouble. Makes you understand why a string of England managers agonised over Matt Le Tissier.

Next week: No game, Wolves v Sandwell Town instead.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-03-04T21:10:35Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Maverick Mamuska

Dovey K kicked off this evening's match sitting neatly in fourth spot, with 3-4 games in hand over most of their nearby rivals. However, the pre-match omens were not good. Nick J and Rich H were both late withdrawals, Alex A and Andy B were both hungover and Ian A was playing on the back of a Sunday league match and a fortnight's absence due to sickness.

Previous encounters between these two sides have made for dour, low-scoring affairs. Dovey J have always edged the matches though, usually by a goal margin of two or three.

It was a very shaky start from Dovey J; the entire starting line-up looked disinterested, de-motivated and displayed few signs of the usual composure and steel. In a disappointing first period they rarely looked like a Premiership outfit. A defence in disarray and lacking in discipline soon conceded two goals in quick succession and looked capable of leaking a bucketful more. However, a long-distance effort from Jamie A, coupled with two quick substitutions breathed a little more life into the Dovey J cause.

It was an improved second half performance. Despite conceding an early goal, Dovey J battled back, confounding their first half critics. In a show of defiance, Dovey J battered the opposition goal in the dying minutes and were unlucky not to snatch all three points.

On another night it would have been a desperately disappointing result; tonight it was a very welcome point.

Final Score:

Dovey Junction 4 v 4 Maverick Mamuska

Jamie A

Andy B

Ste H

Sean W

Alex A: Conceded a couple of suspect long-range efforts, which, on another day, could have been parried to safety. Reflexes not 100% due to night-before hedonistic activities. Two fine second half saves kept Dovey J in the contest.

Ian A: After two weeks on the sidelines though illness and on the back of an afternoon Sunday league appearance, the veteran was always going to struggle with fitness levels. Not a great performance but equally, not his worst. Steadied the ship in the first half and helped create a series of second half chances.

Jamie A: Struggled to marshal the defence early on but settled down to a decent performance. Guilty of two wayward clearances (which literally flew horizontally across his own goal) but made up for them with a stunning long range effort and goal in the first half; something that is rapidly becoming a speciality of his.

Morg: Unusually erratic and ill-disciplined first half. Ended up playing as a lone striker, forfeiting his role as the link man in midfield. Settled down in the second period and managed to impose himself on the game with some solid tackling.

Ste H: A very frustrating and suspect first half, compounded by poor fitness. Seemed to have reverted to his old-age habit of chasing the ball and drifting away from his man; often leaving the defence exposed. Much improved second half and was at the heart of the final minutes' goal action.

Andy B: Disappointing performance from the Dovey J No. 9. Aside from an excellent second half strike, his shooting was poor and his movement limited. Faces a hefty club fine for alcohol-fuelled antics the night before a big match.

Sean W: Inspired last minute selection. Guilty of dropping too deep on occasions but only through a hunger to win the ball. The flair man of the team, Sean was the only player to regularly threaten the Maverick M goal. The difference between a defeat and a draw.

MOTM: Sean Walkden

Next week: Ralgex.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-02-27T09:27:35Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Manbreast United

Last week's second half performance v local rivals, Santiago All Stars wasn't even worthy of a match report. We lost 6-1 after being level at the break. Enough said.

On the back of that morale-sapping result, Dovey J lined up against new boys, Manbreast United tonight; a test of mettle, confidence and resolve.

From kick off, Dovey J looked a different outfit to the one trounced last week. Composed and classy in possession, exciting going forward and lethal in front of goal, they soon took an early lead courtesy of Rich H. Manbreast Utd looked thoroughly out-classed, out-muscled and out-performed. A fine first half performance saw Dovey J enter the half-time break 3-0 to the good.

More of the same was evident in the second period. A series of wonderful passing movements resulted in a 5-minute hammering of the opposition goal and a flurry of clinical, and even spectacular finishes. This was arguably Dovey J's best ever performance; it was just a shame a nice group of young lads had to be on the receiving end. As the final whistle blew, the boys in orange and black celebrated a convincing 8-0 win; a result which propels them back amongst the leading pack.

Final Score: Dovey J 8 v 0 Manbreast Utd

Rich H (6)

Andy B

Ian A

Alex A: Thanks to a stirling performance by his back three, Alex had little to do in the first period aside from handling defensive sweep-ups. It was a busier second half for the Dovey J No. 1 who pulled off a series of rapid reaction saves, often from a blind position. A fully deserved first clean sheet of the season.

Ian A: Back to his best after a post-Christmas wobble. Bossed the defence in the first period and had the opposition in his pocket without even breaking sweat. His legs tired a little in the second period but did all that was asked of him with ease. Smashed home a typical Angus overlap goal in the first half.

Jamie A: On this performance, it won't be long before J joins his older brother on international duties. Solid as a rock at the back. Also ventured forward with a new-found confidence and acted as a devastating playmaker in the middle of the field. Distribution immense.

Ste H: Nothing spectacular but did his job perfectly. Refused to shirk a challenge and powered forward frequently. Ste's reading of the game continues to improve, making the Dovey J defence one of the meanest in theemiership.

Morg: A welcome return to the starting line-up for Morg after a fortnight out with the flu. Tremendous all-performance, Morg adds a much needed physical presence to the Dovey J midfield. The new Roy Keane?!

Andy B: This was the long-awaited return to top-form for the Dovey J No. 9. Never short of effort, tonight was the night Andy's confidence came flooding back. A tireless performance, he was rewarded with a stunning second half goal. This performance will strike fear into premiership defences.

Rich H: After a week of cold turkey, the Dovey J big man proved just what he is capable of. Absolutely destroyed the opposition's defence and could have had 15. I am sure he will settle for the 6 he drilled home. Brilliant.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-01-21T21:48:23Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Special Brew

After a disappointing defeat to Rodney's Pilchards over the Christmas period, it was crucial that Dovey J maintained their otherwise impressive start to the season by taking 3 points from Special Brew.

Dovey J suffered a spectacular thumping to Special Brew last season and were evidently keen to avoid a repeat. Special Brew are one of the most talented and physically strong teams in the premiership but too often flatter to receive. It promised to be a corker.

The match kicked off in a cautionary manner; neither side willing to risk their defensive shape. Special Brew had the best of the opening possession and looked the more comfortable of the sides. However, their efforts on goal were limited. After a close fought first period, Dovey J entered the break, 2-1 down.

Dovey J looked a beaten team at half-time. Heads were down, confidence drained and legs tired. The omens for the second half did not look good. Nevertheless, a couple of crunching challenges and a hatful of decent efforts on goal appeared to revitalise the boys in orange and black. A quick equaliser was soon cancelled out by a well-taken Special Brew effort; at this stage few would have bet on a successful Dovey J comeback. However, in a passionate and controversial final few minutes, Dovey J lashed in two last-gasp efforts and revelled in a spectacular victory.

This victory elevates Dovey J into second spot with a game in hand. Massive top-of-the-table clash next week v local rivals, Santiago All Stars.

Final Score: Dovey Junction 4 v 3 Special Brew

Alex A: Outstanding between the sticks. So often the difference between 3 and 0 points. Best keeper in the league.

Ian A: After an enforced 5-week absence through international duties, the veteran looked a shade of his former self. Seems to have left his strength and stamina somewhere in a field in Bangladesh. Looked shaky in the first period but put in a much more robust and confident performance in the second half.

Jamie A: Thoroughly dependent throughout. Rarely troubled and always confident in the tackle and in possession. Mr Dependable.

Ste H: Arguably his best performance in an orange and black shirt. Fiercely committed from the outset, he virtually wiped out the threat from the Special Brew No. 9. Fantastic tackling and a much improved sense of awareness and positioning. Man of the match.

Nick J: Passed a late fitness but went on to demonstrate his worth to the team. A terrific performance full of grit, skill and guile. Rewarded with two well worked goals. A massive asset to the squad. Definitely the signing of the season.

Andy B: Has a tendency to frustrate in front of goal but more than makes up for it with his endless commitment, stamina and ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play. Notched up another good goal to his impressive career tally. Just about avoided a second half sending off for excessive verbal.

Sean W: The rotation system seems to be working this season. Again, at short notice, Sean was drafted in to the starting line up and did a stirling job. A tricky-footed striker with a lethal finish, he was a critical part of this victory.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-01-08T22:08:55Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v The Badgers

'Dovey Dish Out A Badgering'

Unfazed by takeover speculation, Dovey J kicked off against their old rivals, The Badgers, in a determined mood. Dovey J dominated from the outset, bossing the play and hammering the opposition's goal with remarkable frequency. The Badgers - clearly not in their usual combative mood - looked helpless and failed to test the Dovey back line. J opened the scoring after 5 minutes with a delightful effort from the half-way line, which floated into the top corner of the net; goal of the season to-date. The fans applauded, J looked stunned and Alex pissed himself. A goal from J is rare enough - one of that standard comes as quite a shock. Dovey pressed on, looking composed and creative and soon found the net again with a tidy effort from Andy B. Only heroics by The Badgers goalkeeper prevented a first half battering. Dovey were disappointed to enter the break only 2-0 ahead; it could have been 10.

The second period was a much tougher affair. Dovey J were continually frustrated in front of goal, which seemed to generate a new-found confidence in the opposition. The stalemate was broken 3 minutes from the end with a well struck Badgers goal from distance. A difficult few minutes ensued but the Dovey defence held firm, guaranteeing another well-deserved 3 points.

Final Score:

Dovey Junction 2 v 1 The Badgers

6 points from a possible 6, propels Dovey to the top of the premiership. Expectations are high. Could this end in a top 3 finish? On this performance, certainly.

Alex A: Aside from a flurry of second half efforts, the Dovey No.1 rarely looked threatened and when he did, the danger was expertly parried. Excellent distribution. Must be disappointed not to record his first clean sheet of the season.

Ian A: Commanding and composed, this was the veteran centre half's best performance in months. He 'took out' the opposition's No.9 early in the first half with a typically robust challenge. He battled hard throughout but also displayed a new-found confidence in possession. Sprayed the ball about with ease and stylishly brought the ball out of defence. Alan Hansen eat your heart out. His final game until January 2007 due to international duties.

Jamie A: Arguably his finest hour (or 24 minutes). It is doubtful that he will hit another goal of such beauty again in his career. Displayed courage, tactical brilliance and guile. His partnership with his older brother is becoming near invincible again.

Rob B: A last minute call-up for the Santiago All Stars player. When either Angus brother was off the field he held the back together admirably. Incredibly strong in the tackle and dangerous going forward. A disciplined performance and a very useful addition to the squad.

Nick J: Another quality performance from the Dovey playmaker. Excellent tracking back and crucial in driving the team forward. Failed to be intimidated by the knocks and didn't stop running. The ghost of Ben's departure has finally been laid to rest.

Andy B: Although still lacking full fitness after a sustained lay-off, his performance and effort was 100%. Held the ball up brilliantly and created an array of chances. Gulity of one or two mis-fired efforts but overall, brilliant.

Sean W: Another old face, drafted in at short notice, Sean turned out for his third match of the evening. Crippled by a debilitating blister his performance was limited. Nevertheless, he gave 100% and could not be faulted. Another excellent squad player.

After a 3-week end of season break, Dovey Junction kicked off their second season in the top flight with a difficult tie against top four side, Wombourne Heat.

With the Homfray brothers absent through injury, Dovey J welcomed back Andy B, after a 4 month-lay off, and handed a debut to Neil A; a founding squad member of the legendary Young Guns.

Wombourne Heat kicked off the first half at a blistering pace, pressing all men forward and playing whenever possible off their danger man in blue. A defensive Dovey J starting line-up looked lethargic and confused. Within 5 minutes, Wombourne Heat were 2-0 to the good and could have had more. Nick J drilled home an opening goal for Dovey before Ian A curled in an equaliser shortly afterwards. A flurry of goals before the half time whistle ensured that the sides entered the break all square.

Half time: 4-4

The old cliche, 'a game of two halves' couldn't be more appropriate to describe the second period. Dovey J dominated with the opposition restricted to a series of fruitless counter attacks. Quick and neat passing football began to undo Wombourne Heat, whose older squad faded rapidly. Massive gaps began to appear in the Wombourne H back line which Nick J and Neil A exploited ruthlessly. With better finishing and little less selfish play, Dovey could have had 15. Instead, they will happily settle for a 9-4 victory, a second half clean sheet and three points on the board.

Final Score:

Dovey Junction 9 v 4 Wombourne Heat

Goals:

Neil A (4)

Nick J (3)

Andy B

Ian A

Alex A: Faultless performance from the Dovey J No.1. Had little or no chance with Wombourne Heat's opening goals; one a penalty, the others, ferocious short range efforts. Made a series of essential second half blocks. Arguably, the best keeper in the league.

Ian A: Struggled to control the opposition's tricky striker in the opening 6-7 minutes but by the end of the half was looking his usual composed self. Good distribution from the back. Made a number of dangerous runs forward but lacked the service in front of goal. Struck a good first half goal with the outside of his right boot.

Jamie A: Kicked off the half looking decidedly pale and complaining of stomach cramps. The windeeze tablets soon kicked in though and ensured a typically robust performance from the Dovey J centre half. Had a handful of speculative long-range efforts which flew wide of the target. Did a first class marking job on the Wombourne No.9 in the second half; snuffed him out of the game.

Morg: Nothing spectacular but another crucial workmanlike performance from Morg; did everything that was asked of him. Tackled hard, tracked back, played the simple ball and maintained possession. The engine of the side.

Nick J: Alert from the start, the teenager was at the root of most of Dovey's forward play. A constant thorn in the side of the opposition's back four he hit a deserved hat-trick and threatened even more. Negotiations are under way to make the loan deal permanent.

Neil A: A controversial selection which sparked bitter words before kick off. At times, world class, at others, utterly frustrating. Tonight however, he added a much needed extra dimesion to Dovey's play. Guilty at times of showboating and failing to release the early ball. His selection was warranted with 4 wonder goals.

Andy B: A welcome return to Sixes football for Andy B, after a 4 month-lay off with a serious knee injury. Remarkably, his fitness remains very good. His first touch has suffered slightly; inevitable after such a long spell on the physio's couch. All in all though, a very good return to first team football. He held the ball up well, created chances for others and weighed in a with good goal.

Next week: our old rivals, The Badgers.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-11-12T22:30:45Z</dcterms:modified>

Less Than All White On The Night For Dovey J

After an impressive run of form, Dovey J faced a stern challenge on Sunday evening versus All White. Earlier in the season Dovey J recorded an impressive 6-5 victory over the league leaders. A victory would have catapulted Dovey J into contention for an end of season top four finish.

Unsure how to handle their opponents Dovey J kicked off the first half in a slovenly and awkward manner. Looking sluggish, Dovey conceded three goals in quick succession, making a rout a distinct possibility. Movement was exceptionally poor resulting in a series of wasted goalkeeper clearances. However, as the half progressed the boys in orange and black steadied their play and even began to create one or two opportunities. On the stroke of half-time Nick J drilled home an effort past All White's rather rotund No.1.

The second half proved an entirely different affair. With a tighter back line Dovey J began to press forward and create a series of opportunities. All White, expecting a further flood of goals began to get frustrated as the Dovey defence held firm. 5 minutes in, the league leaders began to look rattled and resorted to more sinister tactics. After a flare up between Ian A and the All White No. 9 the ref began to lose total control of the game. All White attempted to intimidate as the ref stood idly by. Dovey showed an unusual strength of character though and hit back. Nick J spotted an opportunity and drilled an indirect free kick which ricocheted off a defender and flew into the bottom corner. Unsuprisingly the ref bottled in and disallowed the goal. That was the turning point.

All White responded with a fourth goal, all but wrapping up the contest. Rich H smashed home a late consolation goal but it wasn't enough to save Dovey J from defeat.

Final Score:

Dovey Junction 2 v 4 All White

Goals:

Nick Jones

Rich Homfray

Alex A: Had little chance with any of the goals conceded, each of which was drilled home well out of reach. Made a number of crucial first half stops but, in testament to Dovey's defence, had a much quieter second period. Distribution in the opening 5 minutes wasn't good but was forced by an appalling lack of movement.

Jamie A: Looked a little forlorn in the opening minutes as the marking collapsed around him. First half highlight was a blatant clip on their No.9 in front of his own goalkeeper - if nothing else it amused the crowd. Outstanding second half performance; had the beating of the opposition's strikers 9 times out of 10.

Ian A: Helped steady the ship in a difficult first half and displayed some neat touches. Aside from a spectacular volleyed effort which clipped the stansion, he spent most of the second period on the bench. Likely to face a fine for breaching club rules and drinking heavily the night before a big match.

Ste H: Wobbly first half performance, characterised by a return to his 'wandering' style of play. However, alongside J he performed well in the second period and added some much needed steel to the Dovey midfield.

Morg: Quiet-ish game on his return from injury. 100% for effort but never looked like breaking down the All White defence. Guilty of a howling miss late in the second period.

Nick J: Another impressive, workmanlike performance from Nick J, capped off with another good goal. His lack of pace was exposed by a quick and very organised All White defensive line.

Rich H: After destroying All White earlier in the season it was apparent from very early on that the Dovey No.9 was a marked man. Struggled to break free from his man throughout but cannot be faulted for effort. Cracked home an excellent second half goal, much to his relief.

Next week: Sixes Cup First Round v Div 1. Window Lickers

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-10-09T20:21:53Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Maverick Mamuska

Rocked by late injuries to Ste H and Morg, Dovey J were forced to field a new-look and unusually attacking side to face league strugglers, Maverick Mamuska. Languishing in second-bottom spot with only 1 win in 18, Maverick Mamuska kicked off as the underdogs against a confident and resurgent Dovey J. However, the clash between these two sides earlier in the season was a dour affair, finishing 4-1 to Dovey J; a scoreline that flattered they boys in orange and black.

Dovey lined up strongly with Ian and Jamie holding the back with Nick and Rich leading the attack; it should have resulted in an early onslaught - it didn't. MM kicked off at a ferocious pace, chasing every ball and battling hard in every challenge; clearly defying their lowly league position. Dovey looked rattled and although rarely tested in front of goal looked distinctly blunted in attack. A lacklustre first half performance resulted in Dovey entering the break at 1-1.

The second half was marginally better for Dovey J, who began to apply concerted pressure on the MM goal. However, a dogged performance by the MM centre-half restricted the number of clear cut efforts. A fierce drive from Rich H late in the half gave Dovey a 1-goal advantage; a lead they managed to hold on to despite a flurry of last minute scare efforts from MM.

Final Score: Dovey J 2 v Maverick Mamuska 1

Not the most convincing of performances by Dovey J but Maverick Mamuska are a decent side; they simply lack the killer touch up front. Nevertheless, another 3 points in the bag and the unbeaten run continues. Next week, a real test v league leaders All White.

Alex A: Had to deal with very few close-range efforts but spectacularly parried a series of speculative long-range efforts. Didn't put a foot wrong and made a number of very good saves.

Ian A: A strangely subdued performance from the veteran; although he rarely looked troubled. Due to the attacking line-up he was unable to make his trademark surging runs forward. Seemingly, struggles to motivate himself against lower league opposition.

Jamie A: Quiet in the first half but commanding in the second. Held the line well, organised and was strong in the tackle; totally snuffed out the MM No. 9. Second time in 3 weeks in which the Angus brothers, have at times, looked confused together at the back; they need to sort it in time for next week.

Nick J: Another excellent performance from the teenager; despite being forced to play in an unfamiliar midfield role. Took a lot of stick from the MM defence but gave as good as he got. Didn't stop battling and was rewarded with a good first-half goal. His permanent signing is due to be concluded mid-week.

Jani: Debut game for the 16-year old triallist. Displayed some nice touches but struggled to assert his authority in the middle of the park against an older and very physical opposition. Managed a couple of efforts on goal but failed to really trouble the MM goalkeeper.

Rich H: Again, the Dovey No. 9 struggled to break down the MM defensive line. Battled hard throughout but had few chances on goal. To the relief of his team-mates he did manage to smash home the all important winner in the dying minutes.

Dave S: Returned for only his second start this season. His poor fitness levels continue to limit the amount of impact he can make in any one game. Looked dangerous when on the field but only managed two, short 3-minute bursts of play.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-10-01T20:05:40Z</dcterms:modified>

Dovey Junction v Operation Wolf

An end of season mid-table clash, with neither side having much to play for, promised to be a dull affair. And the first half certainly didn't disappoint. Operation Wolf, victors in the earlier fixture, were forced to field a weakened side including, somewhat bizarrely, the referee.

Dovey kicked off the encounter with a strong starting line up but failed to take the initiative. Operation W sat deep, soaked up the relentless Dovey pressure and
